The Increasing challenge of tackling stress in the recession
As the recession begins to bite it is even more important for employers to be sensitive to the additional stresses staff may experience in the workplace. A recent CIPD absence management survey showed that the respondents cited management style in the top three causes of work related stress and that stress was the leading cause of long term sickness absence in non manual workers.
Guidance for line managers and HR professionals jointly published by the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD), Investors in People and the Health and Safety Executive seeks to build on the principles in the standards. The guidance identifies the key management behaviours that cause and alleviate stress in the workplace and groups behaviours under the following areas:
- Managing emotions and having integrity
- Managing and communicating existing and future work
- Reasoning/managing difficult situations
- Managing the individual within the team
This guidance impresses the importance of managers integrating “good” behaviours into their everyday management techniques.
