Managing sickness absence - Government consultation on "fit note"

The Government consultation on the new “fit note” opened on 28th May 2009 and will last for 12 weeks. This forms part of the Government’s response to Dame Carol Black’s report into the health of Britain’s working age population which was published in March 2008.

The cost to the British economy of working age ill-health in terms of working days lost and worklessness is over £100bn each year. Employers know that tackling sickness absence effectively reaps great benefits for their business and employees. Employers are increasingly looking for more holistic ways of tackling sickness absence and many believe that the traditional sick note system has hampered progress.

Currently the GP sick note contains information on an individual’s health condition and how long they should be absent from work until they have fully recovered. The proposals are for the new "fit note" to focus on what an individual can do at any given stage, rather than what they cannot. It will contain information on what the employee is capable of and what steps their employer can take to ensure a speedy return to work.

The new "fit note" system will be rolled out across the UK from Spring 2010.
